A question for anyone who has ever had to deal with a collection agency.
Over the period of this last month I have had to deal with (for the first time in my life) a collection agency for a business license that went unpaid for a period of time. I always had the money to pay it but forgot to pay the renewal fee before it was sent off to collections. I've only been a business owner for the last year and just assumed that the license would not renew if it was not paid. Boy was I wrong. The original fee was to the tune of $60.00 and peaked at $160-something by the time it was sent off to collections. The collections agency took the liberty of applying the maximum percentage fee allowable by law, 50%, to the principal. I now owe over $250 for what was originally a 60 dollar business license. I know it is my fault for not renewing and being new to the scene is no release for my liability in this situation. The collection agency is contracted (they did not buy the debt) to collect on behalf of the city. I have tried numerous times to barter the fee down from 50% and to pay in full but they seem unwilling to negotiate. They told me a short while ago that they have not reported on my credit. Will this incident show up on my credit report regardless of whether or not I pay it? Does it hurt me if I wait too long to pay it while goofing around trying to get a fee reduced that might never be negotiable? Thanks in advance for anyone who is able to give me some much needed advice. The collection agent has started to get bitter with me even after only a month and I don't want to deal with this crap forever, but I'm willing to stand my ground so long as I have more than one leg to do it with. Edit: Feel free to upvote this so it can get a bit of visibility and maybe even some advice from a collections agent :)
